Missions Friend trapped in rubble of Haiti earthquake

A friend and fellow missionary, travelled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti one hour before the earthquake hit. He is thought to be under the rubble of a collapsed Free Methodist Missions work building in the Haitian capital.

Gene Defour and I went to Swaziland, Africa on my first missions trip. He is the man in the picture that I have my arms around his shoulder.

Please pray for the safety of Gene Defour and the comfort for his family and friends.

Back to Where it Began...

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone reading this blog! May your life be richly blessed in 2010.

Few, What a year its been! I've been so blessed. My mother recently sent me an e-mail (by the way, it was her birthday recently...and yes, I did send her flowers from South Africa!) that made me realize how fortunate I've been. Over the past year, I've travelled overseas a hand-full of times, returned to Swaziland on a few occasions, applied for permanent residency in another country, found the girl of my dreams, live in a house that I never even thought possible, and have a new "mans best friend" named Balou (he's a 6 month old Viszla puppy)! What a remarkable time in my life.

Anyway, as I count my blessings, I also realize the grim realities of this world. On how, upon my 4th return to Swaziland, the situation seems to become more and more desperate. People are so terribly hungry and people are so terribly sick that it makes my head spin. It's just in my nature to want to help. I can't help it. It's like I see my fellow man hurting, and it forces a reaction deep within my soul. It aches my heart more than anything.

Alas, there seems to be a real movement of people. Something I must and will continue to be a part of.

Individuals are banding together to make a difference. It's all about turning off the television and being a catalyst for change! Take that extended weekend and use it for good, positive moments in someone else's life.

I don't do this for recognition. I don't do this to get a pat on the back from friends or family. This is not for some twisted "self-worth." I do this work because I truly enjoy it. My friend, Rev. Bob Deland, claims that he's seen me at my happiest when I am with these children. I think pictures tell a thousand words.

There is really no way to describe the emotions that come over you when you hold an orphaned child. The innocence in the whites of their eyes is mesmerizing. Sometimes, they hold onto you so tight, as if they've never felt the affection of another person before. It effects you to the real core of your being. It makes the hairs on your back stand as you ponder the question "Why her and not me?" What did I do to deserve a life of privilege?

Hi everyone! Some fun updates on my side...Garmin has kindly brought me on board as an ambassador for their products. A couple of exciting things in the pipeline. One being the the new featured voice of their Garmin Navigational devices, and two racing with one of their sailing teams. Below you will find a few pictures of our latest Wednesday night Royal Cape Yacht Club Twilight Series races.

This stuff is in my blood!!! I LOVE SAILING! I dabbled in it on Lake Michigan while living in the United States, but this ocean racing is completely different. There's nothing quite like the howl of the Cape Doctor (Strong/Gale force Southeasterly winds in the Cape) puffing at your sails and having everyone leaning outside the lifelines to balance the 43' boat from heeling over too far! It's all about maximize the speed of the boat! Luckily, WindPower (the name of the 43' Landmark sailboat Skippered by Phil Gutsche of Coca-Cola) and its crew continue to shine in our performance with all first place finishes this Spring Season.

I was lucky enough to travel to the Far East for my first time. I went with Kenya Airways and the Thailand tourism board to this beautiful country. What an amazing adventure. Simply stunning to say the least. The travels brought me to Myanmar, Lous, and Thailand. I learned a lot about the Buddist religion, saw many temples and waterfalls, snorkled in pristine coral, laid on the beaches and went to a coffee plantation. I was even able to see my own version of "Cheeseburger in Paradise" (see below)!

Unfortunately, as luck would have it, I was stung by a massive jelly fish at the end of the trip. That put things into perspective quite quickly. Let's just say I had a "date with destiny!"

Prague and Vienna

My best childhood friend and I decided we would escape from the real world for a while and go travel through Eastern Europe. Here are a few photos from our Journey. I wish I had enough time to elaborate on each photo. There are so many stories to tell. It ended up being a real educational trip with my friend as we went to several museums, climbed old castle ruins, went to the Leopold Museum, attended a Bach/Vivaldi/Beethoven ensemble inside an old cathedral, went to Dr. Sigmund Freud's house and saw where he practiced and wrote his novel "The Interpretation of Dreams."

So as you can see, it was a unique experience to say the least. Mostly, it was just great spending time with my friend. We can not see each other for ages, and pick right back up where we left off the last time we saw each other; no matter where we are in the world. Now thats a true friendship.

Hi Everyone,

What a long time its been since I updated my Blog. Here I am trying to reason with myself that I would have the time to look after this thing, and what happens? Life runs away from me.

Things are great here in Africa. Still loving every moment of it. I have been doing some traveling. Firstly, here are a few pictures of what I've been up to...then maybe some words to go along with the pictures.

It's always nice to find a "home away from home" but this place surely does it for me. Africa is in my blood. Its intertwined into my heart and soul. I will forever have a special place for this continent in my life. I carry with it the treasures of its cultures and its people.

Recently I was fortunate enough to witness this countries only 4th democratic elections. Here is a picture of Nelson Mandela casting only his 4th free vote of his life. What a neat moment.

I have so many experiences I want to share, but I just can't fit them all on this site. Some are videos and some are audio clips...but as you know, the internet is very slow down here and getting that information onto this site is nearly impossible. Sometime's this is discouraging as I want to share everything with everyone. Just know, that I am happy and that I am doing well.

Off to Johannesburg in the morning. Then flying to Prague and Vienna the 2nd week of May. Back to Swaziland to meet the new New Covenant team in July. Then its off to Berlin (Work) and Greece (leisure). Kilimanjaro is happening this September. And I would like to come home to the States for a while too. So many things, so little time.

These are a few of the pictures of what the Cape Times and The Cape Argus headlined their news papers as "The Hardest Cape Argus Cycle Tour Ever" and "The Cape of Storms." The wind gusted between 65 kn/h and 75 km/h officially. It was one of the hardest races that I have ever been a part of....but what an amazing experience. I conquered the race in 5 hours 4 minutes and 57 seconds. It was 110 km and started in the City Center of Cape Town and toured around the Western Cape Peninsula A.K.A.- The Cape of Storms.

WWF Earth Hour 2009 Commercial

This is a commercial flighting in Africa about a WWF (World Wide Fund/World Wildlife Foundation) campaign. It is called Earth Hour 2009. High profile people from around the world are committing themselves to shutting off their lights for 1 hour on Saturday March 28th from 20h30-21h30, in hopes of 1 billion people world-wide doing the same thing. The objective is not to necessarily save energy for that particular time, but it is focused on raising awareness for Global Climate Change. Specifically , it is directed towards the world leaders who will be meeting in Copenhagen for the United Nations Climate Change Conference taking place on December 7th-18th.

I signed a billboard along with Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu, Bryan Urbana (SA Rugby Captain), The Parlotones (Popular SA Rock Band), and others from around the country. It will be presented during to the world leaders at the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.

I will be saving the world on March 28th, what will you be doing?

Touch Screen Weather Bulletins in Africa!

After months of development and testing the touch-screen interface for our 103" Plasma television was launched last night during my PrimeTime Weather Bulletin in Africa. This is a one of a kind system that features some of the latest technology available in Weather Broadcasting. I am happy to have been a part of its development.

A job well done to my weather staff @ e.tv and e.news, the software developers in Berlin, Germany (MeteoGraphics) and the "U-Touch" team in London. A collaborative effort to make a dream come to reality.

Cycling for Charity

Hello Family and Friends! I have been given a unique opportunity to help support the Compassionate Life Foundation/El Shaddai Ministries as well as the Race4Change organization. I will be taking part in the largest cycle race in Africa called The Cape Argus. It takes place on the morning of March 8th, 2009 and 35,000 cyclists will be participating, including myself.

I have been busy training for this event for the past several months and I need your help to finish it through to the end! 20% of the donations goes to the Race4Change fund, while 80% goes to a charity of my choice. Home for the Holidays

Coming home to the United States for Christmas was both enlightening and confusing. I think it "re-charged" my batteries to give another go in South Africa, while still reminding me that Home is where the Heart is. Seeing family and friends was like a wrinkle in time for me. I have been gone for nearly 10 months, and yet everything seemed like it stood still while I was gone. Even though everyone carried on with their lives..people made great strides in careers, many friends gave birth to their new little ones, and some people grew apart. It still seemed like Home was home, and I will never forget the smells, tastes and feels of CHRISTmas in Michigan.

I was wishing for a "White Christmas" and I think I got a little more than what I had bargained. How beautiful though! The snowstorms kept coming and coming, and coming! There is truly no better feeling than being completely snowed in. Although, sometimes it does interfere with your plans...especially when it takes you 1 hour and 45 minutes to come home from the mall for last minute Christmas shopping. ;-)

Anyway, as wierd as it sounds...One thing I looked forward to the most was my parents pellat stove that they use to keep the downstairs of our house warm. It makes the most relaxing noise, and keeps you nice and toasty during the cold winter months. I curled up in front of that thing, and took naps like it was my greatest concern during my time home. How lovely.

Of course, I was able to see family and friends. In fact, I beleive that this trip was more succesful than I thought it would ever be. I literally got to see most, if not all, of my extended family (at least on the Rodenhouse side). It was the best. I loved being able to see my last remaining Grandmother. She is so special to me and I think and pray for her often.

I also was able to see many of my best friends. This blog post is a little tribute to the people I saw while I was home. Each visit was so special to me. And for the people I didnt get to see while I was in the states...I will make good on it the next time I am in the States.

My father and I where able to do some serious bonding together. We went, snow-shoeing as well as skiing and snowboarding together. Of couse, he was on skis and I was on a snowboard. It was fantastic. The snow was so deep that my brother's dog could barely make it through the snow! he had to jump from each snow-shoe track that my father and I had laid. How funny! My father hadnt skied since the last time we where in Colorado at Winter Park. He mentioned how great it was to pick up the sport again. He says he wants to continue with outdoor winter sporst. Especially in Michigan, where there is an abundance of natural beauty to be seen. I hope he keeps up with it.

Another highlight of being home for the holidays was meeting my new baby nephew for the first time. Baby Ethan, or "baby-E" for short. He is the new pride and joy of my brother and sister-in-law. What a lovely Child. The first picture is of me meeting him for the first time. Needless to say, we had a couple of things to say to eachother. He's got a full head of brown/black hair just like I did when I was born. I can't wait to see him again!

I was fortunate to catch up with a man that I care for so much. I say "catch-up" quite literally becuase this is the busiest Catholic Priest I know. Bob Deland and I where able to spend an evening talking about the many experiences we've had lately. The last time I had seen him was when he visited me in Cape Town. We where fortunate enough to travel through Europe and some of Northern Africa together before I moved to SA. He's a cool man and has a huge heart for the missions...in fact, get this...he brought and organized nearly 30 people from his Parish in Bay City, Michigan to come to the middle of Zambia, Africa to do missions work. This was about 5 months ago. A boy asked him "Father, won't you come back and baptise me?" Now, it's no easy task to get to the middle of Africa...but he is making good on his promise and will be traveling there in the begining of February to baptise this boy. I think thats one heck of a story! there is a real movement in this world to do good, and its spreading! Well done Bob. Thanks for leading by example!

None-the-less, leaving home and traveling back to Africa was rather difficult. I didn't think my mother was going to let me leave. I'm also not much of a cryer, but there where certainly tears on my cheeks as I stepped away from my family in the Grand Rapids airport. It was no easy task. One of the pictures posted was from the last moments with my family. Words can't really describe how much I love them. They are so very supportive of me. And that means all the world to me. Thank you, if any of you are reading this. I coudn't do this without your blessing.

So now its back to the "real life" back in South Africa. Whatever that is. It's summer here and the beaches are packed. I can see the beach perfectly from my house, and I can tell if the waves are rideable. This weekend there is a good swell and an offshore wind, so I think I will go surfing. Keep well everyone. I promise to be more faithful with my blog postings. I know I've been slacking.

Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro

Dear Family and Friends,

It brings me great joy to inform you of my next mission to serve the people of Swaziland, Africa. I am partnering with Kenya Airways to climb the tallest mountain in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro.

I am in the early stages of developing a fundraising opportunity named “On the Road to Swaziland: One Man’s Mission to Serve.” All donations will directly impact the Widows and Orphans of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Swaziland through our U.S. based non-profit, The Compassionate Life Foundation. Donation possibilities are as follows:

Gold Level: $1 USD (10 ZAR)/meter of altitude climbed

Silver Level: 50 cents (5 ZAR)/meter of altitude climbed

Bronze Level: 10 cents (1 ZAR)/meter climbed

(Of course, all donations will be accepted. However, these giving levels will be rewarded with some sort of commemorative distinction. )

Because of the processes involved to get something of this magnitude started, I ask for your thoughts and prayers as I undertake this massive effort. I have already began my training for this climb and have also approached South African Companies for their support.

Derek Van Dam Earns New AMS
Certified Broadcast Meteorologist Designation

Derek van Dam of eNews Channel (South Africa) has earned the American Meteorological Society’s Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation, a professional recognition of the quality of his weather broadcasts. Derek is the first broadcast meteorologist in South Africa to earn the new designation. Among radio and television meteorologists, the CBM designation is sought as a mark of distinction and recognition.

The AMS grants the CBM designation to broadcast meteorologists who meet established criteria for scientific competence and effective communication skills in their weather presentations. The CBM is a new program, launched in January 2005 as an upgrade to the Society’s Seal of Approval program.

“The Society’s Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation clearly recognizes that the holders have the educational background and have been tested in their knowledge and communication of the sciences needed to be an effective broadcast meteorologist,” said AMS Executive Director Keith Seitter. “The general public can have added confidence in the quality and reliability of weather presentations made by broadcast meteorologists approved by the Society.”

Derek Van Dam studied at Central Michigan University and graduated with a B.S. in Meteorology and Broadcast and Cinematic Arts as well as a minor in Mathematics. Derek was one of the first person’s to graduate from CMU’s newly accredited Meteorology program. Even before finishing his studies, Derek was asked to present his broadcasting skills as the weekend Meteorologist for WEYI in Michigan. After graduating he was promoted to the M-F morning meteorologist position where he worked to perfect his skills. After spending 3 ½ years at WEYI, Derek’s Philanthropic interests brought him to Africa, where he now resides and is the Head of Weather/Chief Meteorologist for an International 24-hour news and Weather Channel that covers the Continent. Derek was recently voted by local South African’s as the Countries Best Newcomer. Derek’s interests include Philanthropy, soccer, rock-climbing and guitar.

To earn the CBM, broadcasters must hold a degree in meteorology or equivalent from an accredited college or university, pass a rigorous written examination, and have their on-air work reviewed to assess technical competence, informational value, explanatory value, and communication skills.

In addition to the initial educational and test requirements, CBMs have to earn professional development points in order to maintain their certification. These points can be earned by attending scientific seminars or meetings and similar activities.

The AMS is the nation’s largest professional society for those in the atmospheric and related sciences. The Society, founded in 1919, has more than 11,000 members around the world.

Returning to my Mission

These are just a few of my pictures from my latest mission trip to Swaziland. My major task was to create another documentary for Compassionate Life Foundation. The plan was to use the documentary as a video example to current and prospective donors to show the positive effect our work has had on the area. As fate may have it, the video will be delayed for a while as the footage and camera was stolen from my suitcase in the Johannesburg International Airport. That's another story in itself. All I have to say is that the devil is a strong force that seems to work hard to keep good people from succeeding.

On another note...it was still a very successful trip. I was able to see how the children have grown up so healthy because of our contributions. In fact, one little girl in particular really sticks out. Her name is Maria and I met her last time. This time she was so much bigger and entirely healthy! Praise God for the amazing miracles he can perform. What a blessing she is. Here is a before and after picture:

I was able to spend time with some of the donors children. This relationship building is vital is our development in Swaziland. They need to be assured that we are here to stay and that we will never abandon them. I think this brings great comfort in the children. They light up when they see you. It is so beautiful.

We had a birthday party for all the Children that celebrated birthday's within the past month. It was also Busisiwe's 51st birthday, so we celebrated that as well. It was held in the church building that the New Covenant Free Methodist Church funded to build. Our July 2007 team was able to finish the building, and it still looks as fantastic as the day we completed it.

As part of our documentary, I was able to meet and interview a woman who had contracted the HIV virus recently. She was very ill. It was an honour to talk face-to-face with a local Swazi to get their side of the story. She commented on how difficult it was to get tested. The social pressures of not knowing if your HIV positive are high. It's almost a "sweep it under the rug" mentality. She made it clear that she regretted not getting tested earlier, and she recommended all to get tested before it was too late. Words of warning from a woman who has lived it first hand. What an eye-opening experience.

Just one look at how the average Swazi lives and you can see how much need their is for your help.

Back in Swaziland!

Oh how I miss you all so much. I just wanted to update you on whats going on lately. I am in Swaziland at the moment and spending time at the orphanage. I am creating a video for our Compassionate Life Foundation. We visited our new property for the 2nd orphanage that we are opening in Africa yesterday. I also had a one-on-one interview with a woman that is struggling with HIV and TB. It was very eye opening to see whats happening and to see how Swazi's really live. I am going back to the Church we established just now. We will do some more filming and spending time with the children and orphans of this fantastic kingdom. It is very dry here. They really need rain as fires continue to run rampant through out the region. Will update you more when I get home. Love and miss you all!

Visitors Galore :-)

I have been lucky enough to have some very special visitors come to Cape Town and visit me the past few months. Firstly, my sister and brother-in-law and their children (my nephews and nieces), then Bob Deland, and lastly my parents. All of which traveled from the United States to come support me in this far away land. What a wonderful group of people and I thank them for all the great memories and experiences. I know our lives will never be the same after what we've been through.

In the meantime, here are a few pictures of their visit and also a few of my travel pictures with friends.

Just a quick updated...I am heading to Swaziland next week to continue my humanitarian/missions efforts. Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated!

A quarter year passes by...

My time in Africa is really flying by. I think that it is honestly because every moment of my life since I have moved here has been filled with something extremely new and exciting. And I thank God the Father for making this life possible.
The video that is embedded in this blog entry is from a television show that interviewed me a few weeks back. It is called "Magg's on Media." It's just a short piece on who I am and what in the world I am doing in Africa. I think they did a great job putting it together.
The pictures you are looking at are from the past 3 weeks of my life. I am wearing a barrette to celebrate Bastille Day (French Independence) with some of my friends from Paris. We where in the most quaint South African town called none-other-than Franshoek, which means the French Quarter. It was quite a good time. Look at this beautiful, sun-struck Dutch Colonial style church that I came across. It was built in the mid 1800's. Franshoek is a very old town. Caught a sunset near my house the other day...it was nothing short of spectacular. The reason I am dressed up in some of the pictures is because my friends and I had a 1920's style party at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. It has proven to be a highlight of my time down here as well. The picture of me holding a surf board is from my first surfing experience in South Africa. Their is a beach here named Muzinberg, that has the perfect wave break. I am very into surfing these days...it really brings a smile to my face. So you might as well do things that make you happy, right? :-)
Recently, there was a large event in Africa called "Big Wave Africa." I presented specific Swell reports for the surfing event during my weather broadcasts. It was held at a place called Dungeons just outside of Hout Bay Harbour. As a token of their appreciation, they invited me onto the NordicCat surfer's boat to get a up-close viewing of the event. It was great to be with the professional surfers leading up to, during and after the event took place. You got to see how the best-of-the-best prepare for such a challenging sport. The waves that where ridden during this event where as tall as 4-story buildings. It was unlike anything I have ever witnessed. The surfers would come back with completely broken/snapped surf-boards and then rush out again to catch the big waves.
Other pictures are taken from my television's world headquarters in Johannesburg. Their new television sets for the 24-hour channel are incredible. The ratings have been tallied and it is confirmed that the launch of the 24-hour news channel was highly successful. It continues to dominate over it's competion.
While I was in Johannesburg, I visited the South African Weather Service. It was great to meet colleagues that work in the meteorology business, especially from another country/continent. I carried on to Soweto, Mpumalanga and the Free State (different provinces in South Africa) to do a commercial shoot for e.tv.
A lot of big moments are coming up in my life this August and September including a visit from my parents and my best friend. I am looking forward to every minute of it. Miss you all so very very much.

I have come to this beautiful country. I now call it my home. I am so blessed to have such wonderful friends and family that support me. Sometimes I sit back and wonder "why me?" I have had some things occur that I have not written about on my blog. I feel like this is a suitable time to get into them.

While traveling with my family, we drove by a township (an area where black and coloured people fled during/after the Apartheid). This area of battered tents and shacks had a profound impact on me. I have never seen a larger gap between the rich and poor, or the "haves" and the "have-nots" in this case. Why did God choose me to have this lifestyle? Why am I not living in a township like so many others in this world? It really puzzles me think about this. I believe there are a lot of things on this earth that we are not exactly supposed to completely understand. This may be one of them...but I really don't want it to be. I have compassion for these individuals. My heart aches to know their vicious circle of trials and tribulations simply to survive. I want to do more. I want to help. Now comes the difficult part...bridging that gap between "saying" and "doing." It's true..talk is cheap. But I am committed to make a difference in this world. Whatever I can be a part of...bring it on!

I have plans to go back to Swaziland in September. I can't wait to see the faces of those children. I haven't been able to go back since moving here, so this is certainly something I am looking forward to. I plan to organize another documentary with my television station. This is the organization that I sit on the board of directors for. Take some time and look over this website. It is truly amazing to see what God has been doing. We have been planning a big fundraising dinner in the United States to help support El Shaddai Ministries and The Compassionate Life Foundation. I continue to attend a church in town called Church on Main. Its a wonderful place with people near my age that worship God. I have really met some wonderful people though this church and have even joined a bible study that meets weekly. It sends shivers down my back to be in a room with fellow Christians, singing wonderful music and praising God. Not to mention, being in another country/continent with so many new faces, many of different cultures, and worshiping the same God. It certainly is a unique experience.

Some other things I have been up to lately..,.I went paint-balling the other day. I have been doing a lot of mountain climbing. I play the guitar a lot since being here. Our E.tv soccer team plays a match against the Cape Town Ajax team soon. I am taking surfing lessons this week. These are all things that make me happy. Life is good. Thanks for listening. Hello again,

My apologies for not updating this lately. I have really been consumed with work and my family visiting South Africa. So much has happened in the past few weeks that I dont even know where to begin. I guess I will start with the launch of our 24-hour news and weather channel. June 1st was a huge success for E.tv/E.news. Our station launched that Sunday evening, and I was part of the first 15 minutes of its broadcast. How exciting. I can honestly say, aside from some minor glitches, that the station was flawless and continues to shine in its 3rd week on air. The excitement of being a part of television history is something I will never forget. Since then, we have had countless feedback from viewers around the country and the globe. The weather department took flight and has never looked back. It's been an overwhelming good response so far, and we are determined to keep it up.

God placed yet another special moment in my life when my family visited me in South Africa recently. We truly had the time of our lives. A few of the pictures show the excitement that we all shared. We stayed at a beautiful place along the Indian Ocean with views that are un-parrallel to anything I've seen. We decided to get a little adrenaline going as well..what better way than to go White Shark Cage diving with the ol' fam. I am so blessed.

We climbed some mountains together, and even managed to catch up with a favorite actor of mine. Kiefer Sutherland was staying at the same hotel as my family. This has a very interesting story behind it..but I will keep that one off the ol' blogsite.

Just a quick update on my end: Things are going well here but very very pressured to meet deadlines. Our 24-hour channel is scheduled to air June 1^st. This continues to be the most difficult task I have even been given, but am balancing it with the fact that it is a great opportunity. It’s really stretching my knowledge of meteorology and IT. I am learning a lot about networking computers. How raw data is fed into meteorological work stations. What file formats work where. Developing graphics interfaces for meteorological work stations. How to schedule a department. Spending someone else’s money on equipment ;-). How to forecast in the Southern Hemisphere. Ect. Ect. It’s a lot to take in at once.

I have hired a recent meteorology PhD grad from University of Witwatersrand located in Johannesburg. She is a blonde is very intelligent and should be a good hire.

I was able to spend time at the Headquarters of the South African Weather Service in Pretoria. That is quite the operation. Think of it as the NSSL (National Severe Storms Laboratory) in Norman, but for South Africa. They have smaller offices (similar to the U.S.) throughout the country. I have also spent some operational time at the Cape Town S.A.W.S. Weather systems develop very differently here. There is so much to think about. Full on desert 100 km to the northwest; rainforest 150 km to the east/northeast; an escarpment that covers the eastern half of the country (this is currently providing a large fire danger with foehn winds (they call it a “berg wind” here) coming off the mountain; and of course, 2 ocean currents (warm and cool) colliding at the tip of the continent. How fun!

The biggest challenge has been the pronunciations of the different cities and provinces. I am getting there however!

Went to a great event last night. It's called Madame Zingara's. It's one of Cape Town's gems and best loved restaurants. Once nestled in the heart of the Mother City, this candle-lit bohemian delight is known both locally and internationally. You're first instructed to leave your cares at the door and enjoy an evening of "decadent delight," as they call it. Then you feast and watch the show!

Madame Zingara has given back to the community over the years. Through financing of community projects, support vehicles, educational programmes and subsidised housing, the relationship with the city of Cape Town has always been an intrinsic cornerstone of the business.

However, after six prosperous years, the restaurant was tragically lost to a fire which started in the new roof garden.

Between staff, owners, partners and friends, it was decided to take a new path, one that will allow the spirit of the restuarant to flourish once again. A mobile tent was then constructed. The show/dinner theater now travels between London and Cape Town. This was one of the last nights the event was held in Cape Town. How perfect.

The food is remarkable with a full steak dinner that is drizzled in a chocolate chilli sauce that is unlike anything I've ever imagined. Very tasty.

Bantry Bay, Rugby and a Peugeot

This past weekend was quite eventful. I purchased a vehicle ( a white Peugeot 206 with a roof rack for surfing/kayaking and biking!), moved into a new place, attended my first rugby match and found a church that I enjoy.

The rocky coast pictures are taken from my flat in Bantry Bay. The mountain in the back ground is called Signal Hill. You can run to the top of the hill and can even para-glide off the mountain as well. Everyone is Bantry Bay is quite athletic. They run and bike everywhere it seems. I think it will be good for me because I enjoy being/getting into shape. I run along Beach and Victoria Roads which follow through Sea Point, Bantry Bay, the Clifton Beaches, and into Camps Bay (where I stayed the 1st time I was in Cape Town).

I enjoy living along the ocean for a couple of different reasons. First off, E.tv rented me a flat in the City Center (locals call it the CDB) for the past month or so. It gave me the flexibility of deciding where to call "home" on a more permanent basis. I have always strived to live in an studio apartment downtown of some big city. After living that life for a while, I realized how hectic it is. The noises, the people, the constant traffic, the busyness. It just wasnt for me. I started to gravitate towards the ocean, which is only a 10 minute drive over the mountain and to work anyway. After a month of searching and praying for the right car and right place to live... I ran into a guy, who is now a running/surfing mate of mine. He's from the UK and purchased this lovely flat with the crazy exchange rate from Pounds to Rand (Zar). Side note; if you want to make some real money, move to the UK and invest in property in South Africa. You'll make a bundle. Anyway, after looking at the flat and agreeing to a lease, he asked if I was looking for a vehicle. (He was in my situation of owning nothing in a foreing country nearly 10 years prior) I literally was 3 hours from purchasing a Volkswagon from a dealership that I wasnt overly thrilled about anyway. I was simply sick of annoying used-car salesmen and the whole hassle behind buying a car, that I just wanted it to be over with. Then came along this great opportunity for a spectacular price and I went for it. The timing couldnt have been better. Few!

I joined the Virgin Active gym that is about 5km from my flat. It is perfect running distance along the coast to go work out and come home and relax. I have a "fitness assesment" this week. Whatever that means ;-)

A few friends took me to my first rugby match of my life. I have watched it on TV before, but WOW! This game is intense. And the audience is just as hectic. The sounds of the stadium just roll through the city. It reminds me of walking to a Michigan game in Ann Arbor. The tailgating, the smell of barb-b-q's and all the hype that goes along with it. I still had my flat in the CDB which is across the street from Newlands Stadium. We met at my place and walked over to watch the South African Stormers play the New Zealand Highlanders. Very cool experience. B.T.W.-The Stormers won a decisive victory 26-9.

I have been attending a chuch in a place called Rondebosch, which is a suburb of Cape Town. The church is located in a place called Baxter Theater, which is used for plays and musicals by the University of Cape Town students. It's got a younger vibe to it, with a live band and wonderful music. The people are friendly and have welcomed me with open arms. 2 special occurances have taken place since being there. The first service I attened, they prayed over a man who was moving to Chicago, Illinois for a job offer. He had a very difficult life, living in Johannesburg for quite some time. God gave him the opportunity to move to Cape Town, which he did. His life really came together here and always had aspirations to move to the United States. It really struck a chord with me because this man was in the same situation that I was in nearly 6 weeks ago, just a complete role reversal.

I have learned (thanks to a friend of mine name Bob Deland and our wonderful Euro-adventures) to take the word "coincidence" from our vocabulary. The fact that I was witnessing this man recieve the blessing of his church to move to The United States, sent shivers up my spine. This was a moment where I beleive God spoke to me directly.

The second moment I felt God's presence was when a missionary from the Church introduced her plans to bring a group to Peru. Hmmm....very interesting. Feels like home. I am going to keep exploring for a permanent church, but this place is a great possibility. Here is a website of the church if you would like to take a gander:

E.tv's Headquarters in Johannesburg

Well, its been quite some time since I wrote on my blogsite. I have made several attempts, however the internet is so unbearably slow in this country that it has prevented me from posting. I really miss my friends and family around the globe. I pray for you daily!

An update on life...E.tv flew me to their headquarters in Johannesburg this week. They gave me an unprecendented tour of the new studios. It is phenomenal to witness television history in this country. E.tv/E.News24 is really something. Our competition is the SABC, SKY news, BBC news, CNBC Africa and CNN International. In order for us to compete, we need to "go big or go home." And "going BIG" is not an understatement.

The pictures are of the construction of the new, news sets. They have purchased numerous flat screen televisions for visual enhancement of the studio, including the largest plasma television avaiable. It is a 150" Panasonic Plasma Hi-Def monitor! Whoa!

I am thrilled to be part of something so special for South Africa. From a television standpoint, it is a historic event for this country.

I love this place more than words can describe. I really feel at home in this country and the people have welcomed me with open arms. I know their is absolutely no substitute for the city I was raised...However, this will work just fine ;-) I have found a place to live and will be purchasing a car tommorow. Both of which make me happy. I will post pictures as soon as they come through. Of course, its been a lot of work, but I can always manage to fit in some play time too. I will leave you with a snapshot of last weekend's activities. Thank you God for providing this young man with an opportunity of a life time. I give this all to my savior.

How to Install a 103" Plasma Television...

This is quite possibly the funniest scene I have seen in quite some time. This is a picture from inside our studios in Cape Town. The builders had their work cut out for them today as they moved the 103" Plasma Television screen up a flight of stairs and into the new weather department across the building. And yes...it is as heavy as it looks. Wow! Someone give these guys a drink!

A Taste of Cape Town

Finally feeling a little more settled into this wonderful country. I have made my way to the beach a few times. I have a new running spot that follows right along the Altantic and it is quite the sight. Around every corner I turn their is something new to discover. I was able to fit in another festival between the craziness of work. "A Taste of Cape Town" showcases all the best resturants and chefs in the city and Western Cape. All the chefs come to this event and you sample thier food. This is the first time I have ever tryed Alligator. It was quite tasty, at least the way it was prepared. ;-) This uber-fancy event was held on the cliffs along the side of Signal Hill. It overlooked the ocean with a sunset that was breath-taking. Thank you God for this moment in my life.

I have been to a few braai's at friends houses. Last night I went with co-workers and bosses to a beautiful home near the Kirstenbasch Gardens. The food was served with Cois-Cois (A South African Dish that I may have spelled wrong) and smoked tuna. The South Africans are really interested in American Politics, so we discussed some very interesting things. Becuase this is an open blog, I will refrain from writing any thoughts and/or comments that where made ;-)

I miss everyone back home so much. However, this transition has been quite smooth. Thanks for your support and your prayers and I will post pictures sooner than later hopefully.

Rolling Blackouts and Starting a Weather Department...

This has been one of the more exciting/adventuresome days that I’ve had to date. I am sitting in the complete dark, at a new flat on the other side of Cape Town (Behind Table mountain). There, of course, is a reason why I am in the dark right now. As my mates say to me often, “Welcome to Africa, man.” This is certainly not America, nor Europe, nor New Zealand…this is Africa, and it serves the greatest learning curve known to man-kind. But, I thrive off it. It makes me feel alive. South Africa is in a serious energy crisis right now. They have scheduled “black out” times when certain areas have electricity, and other areas wont. I, of course, happen to be in the dark as we speak. Luckily I recharged my Apple before I got to my new Flat.
The other learning curve that took place today was remembering how to drive in the Southern Hemisphere. I have had plenty of practice in other countries, including South Africa. However, no matter how much you think you know, you still need to concentrate like crazy when traveling the roads. Not to mention, I am now using a station vehicle. YIKES!!! So I get in the Volkswagen, and figure out the alarm system…then I offer a prayer to God. I pray that he keeps me safe as I travel these uncharted territories, in a strange place, in a new car, with no directions to my final destination. I make it “home” and I find myself writing here, in the dark.
I want to fill you all in on the most spectacular opportunity that I have ever been offered in my life. Heading up the weather department at a major National television station, is likely the biggest challenge I have ever faced. I have been working since the first day I got here. It has been very hectic, but in a good way. I arrived and was picked up at the airport by a friend. After being majorly jet-lagged, I had a meeting with my station manager from Johannesburg. He is a very good guy that has worked hard to get me into South Africa, and for that I am appreciative.
Either way, we went out to breakfast with a woman that was a previous weather anchor at E.tv (she is now a reporter). It was a breakfast with a view of the Atlantic Ocean to the left and the Indian Ocean to the right. It was certainly one of those moments where you need to pinch yourself to make sure your not dreaming. It was at that time where I was “handed the keys” to the development of a 24-hour weather department. What a thrilling moment! I oversee every action that is decided upon when creating this department; what weather equipment to use, what satellite provider to work with, who to hire on my team, where to place the 103” plasma television screen and how to structure our daily weather forecasts. I have even created the shift schedules for our 24-hour crew (whom I have not hired yet). The next task is finding and ultimately hiring the appropriate people that have a meteorological background and are good broadcasters for on-air television.
Yesterday, I traveled with a fellow from Germany to The South African Weather Service (SAWS) located at Cape Town’s International airport. It was an urgent meeting because we needed to use the technical expertise of the German in order to speak with SAWS about the products we need. However, the Germans (our graphical provider) had an international flight to catch. So time was limited to say the least. We explained our proposal to the South Africans. It was received well. However, one thing that people need to understand (especially my friends and family from The United States) is that some things do not work the way you would expect them to. The government supports the National Weather Service in South Africa, but they do not get nearly the funding that NWS in the U.S. gets. Their radar system is nothing like the United States, however it will have to do.
So what to do, right? Well, you have to work around the difficulties and make the best of whats around. That’s what’s tended to happen, and its worked well so far. I will try to post some pictures when I get the chance. However, I have been very busy. Tonight I am going to “A Taste of Cape Town,” which is a festival that samples of food from the finest restaurants in Cape Town (and trust me, there are plenty). So I will leave it there and look forward to another entry as soon as I can. Take care everyone!

Cape Town International Jazz Festival

I got the wonderful opportunity to attend the Cape Town International Jazz Festival with a few friends. The music scene is incredible. It has been great because I have been introduced to some local Capetonian musicians. They have really shown me what this country is all about...and that is The Arts. Right up my alley. Anyway, the festival was held at the Convention Center. There where about 8 separate stages in the middle of the city. Some inside and some outside. I went to some of the bigger African musicians shows. However, the pictures that I am showing are from the more intimate shows. The bands consisted of a Stand-up Base, drums, Piano and sometimes a trumpet/clarinet. IT was Jazz at it finest. The artists spanned the globe from Japan, Sweden and even some Americans. They love playing in this city, or at least what they all said before their shows. There is a lot of energy from the crowds, but its not the same as American concert. People are extremely considerate. No pushing or cramming to the front. In fact, the front of the concerts are for the people who want to lay/sit down on the grass and just watch the music. The dancers are situated a little further back. Of course, the inside venues are seated.

This morning I was shown around the City with the "mother" of the Television station I work for. She is the resident "mother" at E.TV/E.Sat because she looks after everyone. She is a South African who has lived in the Western Cape all her life. She really loves it here and is so proud of her city (as most/if not all Capetonians are). She showed me the Parliment buildings, museums, Virgin Active Gym, beautiful parks and housing. She has been a blessing for me because she really looks after me. Its great.

Anyhow, things are going well here. Still dont have a car, but got accepted for a bank account the other day. That means a car will be coming soon!! Cant wait. I have been very, very busy with the weather department since I have been here. People from Berling, Germany and Johannesburg all met me at the TV studio this weekend so that we can coordinate the weather department. They have really given me free reign to design/incorporate every aspect of the weather department. This is an amazing responsibility, but very exciting! All I know is, I have a lot of work to do over the next few months.

With that said, Cape Town is the most spectacular city I have ever laid eyes on. I have learned so much about this culture and its only been 2 days. I have eaten sushi on the beach with friends, and had a home cooked meal with a family I know in the heart of the city.

As per the Television station...Wow, is all I can say. They have treated me with the up-most respect and friendliness. This means so much to me seeing that this is a terribly vulnerable move for a 25 year old. From fresh flowers, to a team of movers and a chauffeur...this has been a real journey that anyone could get used too.

Well, I am laying here in my new flat. It overlooks Table Mountain and the "Mother City." What a spectacular view. This is God's country. He has provided this to the people of this world. What a great gift. I feel honored to be here with such a mission. It is great task to perform the weather in another country, or World for that matter. But what a challenge! If I didn't attempt this feat, I would be regretting it the rest of my life.

The internet connection is terribly slow in South Africa and it has provided me some difficulties that I promised earlier in Amsterdam. I was in an internet cafe in Amsterdam and uploading wonderful pictures of everyone that came to my going away parties. Unfortunately, as life has it, my web-browser failed me. So the pictures I have where not uploaded. South Africa, as it seems, has too slow of a connection to upload pictures as the moment. I am currently trying to figure out this problem by changing the resolution of my pictures.

Without getting into painstakingly detail, life is wonderful here. The official start date to our 24-hour news and weather channel is June 1st. However, it sounds like I will be going on-air in about a months time. YIKES! I have to learn all new countries/provinces and weather patterns in such a short time. I am up for the task, but it sure seems overwhelming.

I will write more when I can. As soon as I can post pictures, I will. In the meantime, embrace life and the experiences' it provides.

Hello Again. I happen to find myself in the comforts of my parents house in Grand Rapids Michigan. What a pleasant feeling that is. Especially after such a whirl-wind adventure. I thank God that he has brought my friend, Bob Deland and I, home safely. As life has it, I drank some bad water in Morocco and became very ill. That is why it has taken so long to write on my blogsite.

Anyway, I am home for now. Between juggling hospital visits, going away parties and celebrating Easter, I now find myself facing the biggest move of my life. Reflecting on such a large trip is difficult to do with something so large facing you in the distant future. Either way, I wanted to highlight some of my favorite places that I visited; Ancient Rome, Ponte Vecchio, Michaelangelo's David Statue, Trevie' Fountain, The Vatican and Sistine Chapel where Michaelangelo's painting "God reaching out to humanity" is located, the Crystal Palace in Madrid, seeing the northern Tip of the Continent I am about to live in, riding camels and playing golf in Morocco, Climbing the Rock of Gibraltar, seeing the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, and of course Big Ben!

I kept a very detailed journal to remember the names and places of the locations we visited so I may come back once again. We had plenty of time to read and write as we traveled a multitude of trains (Eurail or bust!) planes, and even some boats!

I feel so blessed to lead a life that has brought travel, a good job and the best of friends and family. It is so important to put God in the driver's seat of my life. He has really taken over and made such an impact on my over-all character and mood. I think this personal journey to Africa is going to be a lesson that not even words can describe. I just can't wait for the opportunities it will create.

I will be posting a special "Thank You" to the people closest in my life. That will be for my next blog. In the meantime, be well and enjoy Spring. I have 4 more days before I move to Africa. I need your thoughts and prayers more than ever. Thank you.

Just climbed the Rock of Gibralter. Looking at Africa in the distance, along with the Coast where the Mediteranean Sea and Spain meet. It is an amazing site to see none the less. Things are well. Getting a little tired from runnnig around. But it is all worth it.
I am traveling to Seville and then to London. Hopefully we will make it. There is a bad storm right now in the UK. Just another obstacle. Talk to you all soon!

one of the most significant moments in my life just occured. I sat in the middle of the Straights of Gilbraltar and stared at the continent that i am about to live at. what a scary but real idea and thought process. moracco is a cultural melting pot i can barely take it all in. i have seen things i never knew existed. also this is a large muslim community: as we speak I am hearing the call to prayer from a muslim mosque....very interesting to hear considering the minaret is right outside my window. i will write more as this all unfolds...all i can say is wow.

Hello everyone. Just left Rome today and have made it to Madrid. Roma is a spectacular city. I have seen things I never imagnied. Florence and Venice are incredible cities. A cultural melting pot of statues and art. I saw Michalangelo´s David statue and also explored the Vatican (Roma) where the Sistine Chappel is located. I climbed to the top of St. Peter´s Basillica (The Cupola) and saw Michalangelo´s painting of God (in the Sistnie Chapel) reaching out to Humanity and also the paintnig of the last judgement. It was a very special moment in my life to see something of such significance.
Traveling this area has brought me a great peace about moving to South Africa. I have figured out major metro systems, taught myself how to navigate large cities. Thanks for checking out the blog. I will write more when I have time...the internet in other countries is much slower and much different. America is so different from the rest of the world. I can´t even begin to describe.

Hello again,

Oh how time flies when you are having fun! The past month has molded into one big going away party. It's been great, but quite hectic. The time is near, and my days in the United States are certainly numbered. However, I wouldn't trade these last few weeks for anything. Here's what I've been up to, and here's where I am going:

A few weekends ago I went ice climbing with my nephew in the Upper Peninsula. What an amazing experience to spend this time with my newphew. It is a real bonding time with him. A lot of trust is given to the individual belaying you (the person who is basically holding the rope you are attached too). Here are a few pictures to give you an idea of what its like:

Now onto my next adventure. EUROPE!!!
I am leaving the confines of Michigan and traveling the world before I head to South Africa. I will be leaving to Paris. From Paris I travel to Austria to go snowboarding in the Alps (specifically Bluendenz). After Austria, its off to Venice, Florence and ROME! Spend some time in Italy and then its over the open water to Madrid. Not going to spend to much time there because we (my friend and I) are traveling to the Straights of Gibraltar where Spain and Africa meet. I am particularly looking forward to standing on the northern most point of the Continent to where I am about to spend a portion of my life. How surreal. After all that, its off to the last leg of our trip. LONDON. We will be seeing the play "Wicked" in Central London. Should be pretty cool.

Basically, I fly back to the States on March 14th and gear up for my going away party in Grand Rapids on the 15th. Prepare myself for a bunch of packing, and then its off to Madison Wisconsin for a possible trainig session for my new job. Should be interesting. After a few days, I will be off to Cape Town....Hmmm...hopefully I can fit some sleep inbetween those trips.

Gearing Up...

I get to thinking about how technology has made this world so small these days. Unbelieveable that we live in a world like this. Its absolutely wonderful. Life is just one journey after another...it really can't get any better on this end. The last time I updated my blogsite was for my trip to Swaziland and South Africa. Well, it literally changed my life. In fact, so much that I am moving there.

I have accepted a job at E.tv (a south african news channel) as the head of their weather department.

One of their headquarters is located in the most beautiful city I could possibly imagine; Cape Town, South Africa. This is where I will reside for the next 2 years of my life. E.tv is a large independent television station in South Africa, similar to our CNN. Since their government has regulated so much of their mass communication over the past several years, there really hasn't been any real growth like the major news stations in the States...Until now. So many Africans have now seen a large demand for "westernized" television, that they have allowed E.tv to start up a 24-hour news and weather channel via satellite. When I was on vacation, I just happened to be at the right place at the right time, and met the right people to make things happen...one thing led to another, and here I am moving to South Africa in 2 months.

I have to admit...I am fairly nervous to move away. Its just so easy to get consumed in everything in the States, that leaving the confines of something you've been so familiar with for so long, is difficult to do. I am confident that everything is in God's hand and that he is leading me into something that I can handle.

For nearly the past year, I have served on a board of directors for a non-profit organization. You may remember it because it is what brought me to Africa in the first place. It is named Compassionate Life Foundation. We focus on humanitarian/mission work in Swaziland by working together with widows and orphans of AIDS victims. We provide them with medicine, shelter and places to worship (among other things). To make a long story short...I will also be working with them while in Africa and going back and forth to some hard-hit areas. It is an important step to make the personal contact needed to keep the trust between the people and the Americans.

I trust that all is well with everyone. I pray for my family and friends daily. I really value any comments or emails that people like to send my way. Feel free to e-mail at anytime. As I come home to the country I once so-adored, I sit here and reflect on the past few weeks with a broad understanding of what reality truly is. Its much clearer now how this trip has changed my life, how its changed the Swazi's life, and how others that I may not even know may have been effected. I have been given a unique opportunity to share this experience with the world, so take it as you may. These pictures say a thousand words, but you must understand one thing. People will never completely grasp the seriousness of a country in trouble until they've breathed it; until they've seen it with their own eyes. I am a new person, with a COMPLETELY different outlook on life. I will do my best to help you understand what its like to be humbled by the face of a dying culture.

On a seriouse note, I have to appologize for something thats weighing heavily on my mind. I wanted to say sorry for the "emotional whiplash" that I may have displayed on this blogsite. I tryed to keep this site focused on just the mission's trip alone. However, while I took some time (post-mission's work) to spend in reflectance, I published some pictures of the experience I was having in Cape Town, South Africa. I was blessed to spend time in a "different Africa." However, there isn't a moment that's gone by that hasn't brought a heavy burden on my back. I remember the children, the sick Orphans in the hospital and the HIV positive woman who could no longer care for her children. While I spent time endulging in a rich lifestyle, I found myself feeling empty in so many ways. I have seen the extremes that this life can bring. It really is a difficult thing to cope with coming back to this "pop-culture America."

We have it so good here in the States, you have no idea. I will never look at a drinking fountain with fresh water pouring from it, in the same way. Nor will I ever take the simple things in life for granted. I could sit here all day and preach about how good we have it...but the truth of the matter is, we are truly empty. We live a lifestyle of consumerism and material possesions. Self-worth is no longer judged by our character or our morales, but by how many TV's we have in our house. We cannot continue as a society like this.

Please, I beg everyone reading this blog; Make a commitment today to live your life of privaledge, with steps of caution. Realize through these pictures, that there is a struggling Continent that is in the need of our help. TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE A CHANGE!

Live From Africa..

WE are in Swaziland! Our second half of our team arrived on Saturday safely. Words cannot describe what I have experienced thus far. For example...a young mother came to us at Manzini (city in swaziland where our church is located.) She is dying of AIDS and her husband has already died...and so has all of her extended family. She has twin three year old daughters that have no where to go when she dies. She asked us to takje her children.

This is one ofmany stories..I would be here all day. Anyways, everything is going quite well. In fact, we have been quite productive, even short a few people for a day. WE have been amazingly accepted and loved by the Swazi people. HEre are 2 pictures.

THe church that we helped build was dedicated on Sunday with 4 different nations represented. Many dignitaries including Bishops from South Africa and Mozambique. We also painted the church and did fencing. Also we played with the children of Africa. They taught us traditional dance and music from their country.

Hello everyone!

We have arrived in South Africa. Unfortunately I don't have much time...but I think you might want to know the right connection to the phone number for our daily phone updates through the church. I just wanted tolet you know that I made it to South Africa. In fact, I am in Johanessburg right now. Unfortunately, half of our group hasnt made it yet. Our plane was cancelled in Flint and had to separate our group and fly out of Detroit and Lansing. I went to the Lansing flight....and because of bad weather in Atlanta, the others where not able to land in time to make the international flight...so to make a long story short, they are stuck in Atlanta...while the rest of us are in a 5-star luxury hotel in Johannesburg..The second half of our team will arive on Saturday morning.

One Week to Go!

Everything is going well and plans are really coming together nicely for our up and coming missions trip to Swaziland, Africa. We were introduced to our Church last Sunday. We prayed together as one. Here is a picture.

Also, a member, closely tied to our group, help put together a prayer guide that has individual prayer requests for each day. Here is a list. Please continue your thoughts and prayers with our team as we prepare for the final week of preparation! Thank you.

Thank you for partnering with us in prayer. We would not be going on this trip without your prayers and support. Below is a suggested daily prayer guide. Please feel free to pray as the Spirit leads or just pray along with the rest of the body.

Monday July 2: Pray for Tom and Linda Mulanix as they leave Flint for the first of 4 days of traveling to Swaziland (SZ). Pray for rest on the flights and for all details to come together. Pray for the team to be able to finish getting ready, physically, spiritually, and emotionally without Tom and Linda being a phone-call away. Finally, Pray for Tom and Linda to rest solely on God in leading this trip.

Tuesday July 3: Pray for the people who are working at El Shaddai, busily preparing for the arrival of the NC team. Pray also for the orphans, that they will be ready to receive so many Americans for such a short time. Pray that they will be able to feel only love and against broken spirits when everyone leaves. Today pray for Bryan and Geri Mulanix as they start their journey to SZ. Lift up Geri as she will be doing some work with music and eye care and Bryan as he will be doing music and devotions.

Wednesday July 4: Pray for the NC team and any time they spend with their extended families on our Independence Day. Allow God to use this time for the team members to share their hearts for Africa with family and friends. Help them keep the trip focused on His glory not the adventure of going. Pray specifically for Gene Dufour, that God will use him in ways that he has never been used before.

Thursday July 5: Pray for the church leadership at the church in Manzini. Pray for provision of support and supplies so that the leaders may focus solely on ministering to the people around them. Pray for lay leaders to be raised to help the church grow spiritually and become a fully developed place of worship. Today pray for Laura Gualdoni. She will be working with games and crafts. Pray also for her time away from her family, that God will work in their lives just as much as He is working in hers.

Friday July 6: Pray today for the project planning and preparation time for the work to be done at the church in Manzini. Let God already have the plans in place for the projects that HE wants to get done while the team is there, not what we want to get done. Pray today for Derek Van Dam. He will be working with the music team as well as organizing soccer. Pray that God continues to use his job to further HIS kingdom.

Saturday July 7: Today pray for the planning and preparation time for the work to be done at El Shaddai. Pray that God leads this time and not the leaders. Pray for final preparations and packing for the NC team still in Michigan. Today pray for Mark and Sue Reber. They will both be leading devotions while in SZ and Sue will be one of the team leaders. Pray that God will give them plenty of rest today so they will be ready to lead.

Sunday July 8: Praise God today for all of the work that HE has done in SZ and for all of the work that HE is doing and all of the work HE will continue to do long after we leave. Praise HIM who is above all names and pray for the salvation of the King of Swaziland and the people under his reign. Pray for Laura Irvine today as she prepares to leave and works on games and crafts with the children.

Monday July 9: Pray today for health and safety for the whole team. Pray against sickness and for extra strength and stamina. Pray today for Ashley Woods. She will be working with games for the children and will be leaving today for SZ with Pastor Dale. Pray that their time together traveling will strengthen their father-daughter bond and that people will see Christ when they see them.

Tuesday July 10: Pray for Pastor Dale Woods today. He and Ashley will be arriving in SZ today. Pray for Dale to have words of wisdom to pass along to the NC team and to the people of SZ. Pray against busyness and worrying about the task at hand to get in the way of God’s plans for him on this trip. Pray that this trip will ignite a passion for Missions in the entire congregation of New Covenant.

Wednesday July 11: Pray for the team as they leave the US today for SZ. Most of the team has never been to Africa before and there are fears associated with anything new. Pray for God to destroy those fears. Pray for safety and rest on the flights. Pray for Jim Klingenberg today. He will be leading soccer with Derek and also helping with worship and devotions. May God use him to bless the children of El Shaddai.

Thursday July 12: Praise God for getting the team safely to South Africa. Pray for their spiritual health today. Pray for God to bind Satan and keep the team out of his hands. Pray for Carla Lyons today. She is one of the team leaders and will also be leading devotions while in country. Pray that God will still her heart and keep her focused on Him.

Friday July 13: Pray for clarity as the team travels from South Africa to Swaziland. They will be on two different smaller flights. Pray that everyone arrives safely with all of their belongings. Pray that the flights are on time as work beginnings today! Pray for Tina Maneke, she is working with crafts and will be away from her family to serve the LORD.

Saturday July 14: Pray for team unity as work at the Manzini Free Methodist Church continues today. Pray that the people of Manzini can see GOD working there, not just Americans. Lift up Dave Sudberry today. Pray that God keeps him healthy, and is his strength on this trip.

Sunday July 15: Praise God today! Praise HIM for what has happened this week. Praise HIM for the Manzini Church and celebrate the dedication today! Pray for Kathleen Reber. Pray that she is able to create fast meaningful relationships with the people of SZ and her love for Christ gives them hope for eternal life.

Monday July 16: Today is the first day of work at El Shaddai. Pray for good weather and adjustment to a new climate. Pray that work does not get in the way of loving the orphans. Lift Lauren Reber up today. Lauren will be working with music also-let her worship be as sweet as incense on the alter to the LORD.

Tuesday July 17: Pray for the orphans of El Shaddai. Let them find peace in God and hope for life. Pray for education and for them to break the cycle of poverty and AIDS in SZ. Pray for Monika Rivers today as she is living her life long dream of being in Africa. Let her see past her dream and look for the BIG picture God has for her.

Wednesday July 18: Let God open the eyes of them team as they absorb the culture of SZ today. May they praise God for all of HIS creations in Africa and around the world. Pray for Don Schacher, may God reveal HIMself to Don in ways that HE never has before. Give Don the spirit to pass that on to the team and people of SZ.

Thursday July 19: Pray for all projects to be finished by the end of the day today. Pastor Dale and Ashley leave today. Pray against culture fatigue and the desires of American comforts. Pray for Tammy Shim today. She will be working with games, crafts and devotions. Pray for her family while she is gone, that her children will grow to love Jesus more because of this trip.

Friday July 20: Pray for a fun day of shopping and a traditional Swazi cookout. Pray that during this time of fun and celebration the purpose behind the trip is not forgotten. Let God’s spirit shine through the team to all of the Swazi people encountered today. Pray for Elaine and Lynn Myers today. Pray that the ministry that they were able to do this week has made their marriage stronger and their love for Christ stronger too.

Saturday July 21: The team leaves SZ today. Pray again for safe travel, no lost people or luggage and on time flights. They will have a long layover at the airport in Johannesburg. Pray against fatigue from taking over and allow them to continue to minister to the people they meet today. Pray of the Swazi hosts, the workers at El Shaddai, the people at the guesthouse the team is staying at and the Manzini Church leaders. It is hard work to host a large group. Pray that they feel blessed and loved because of the NC team.

Sunday July 22: The Mulanix’s will attend church at El Shaddai and then begin their travel home. Pray for rest and refreshment from God during this time. Praise God that He brought Megan Walling to this team and gave her the desire to work with the music team. Prepare her for the separation that will occur by not being around her team geographically upon returning to the states.

Monday July 23: Everyone is back now. Pray for a positive and Godly re-entry and adjustment to life in America. Give everyone peace and rest and the time needed to reflect on what they learned. Help them through reverse culture shock and how to tell their stories. Pray for Sue Morel who will be working with the games with the kids.

The Home Stretch...

In less than one month, our long awaited journey, will be underway. We still have an enourmous task of prepartion ahead of us. In fact, I recently sat down and realized how much work their is still to be done. I ask that you please keep myself and our group in your thoughts and prayers as we "round the home stretch."

In our preparation, members of the group have began a Bible study that meets every Sunday before the morning services. I haven't been able to attend all of them, however, the one that I could make, was quite significant for me. We studied the meaning of John 17 and the importance of Unity. It was a great session, but it wasn't until later in the morning that God really spoke to me. Pastor Dale (New Covenant Pastor) had a good portion of his sermon focus on the the same verse, John 17. It was a total "God Moment," because it was completly un-planned!

Some may call this a coincidence, but I think of it as God speaking to directly to me and the others in the group. It was such a moving moment, that it sent chills up my back all morning long. We also took communion at New Covenant on Sunday morning. It was great to spend time in prayer as a church, and also to dip the bread in the wine. It has a completely different meaning for me, than it did even 6 months ago. It represents so much of what I beleive in, that I see the blood (wine) stained flesh(bread) of Jesus on the cross. He truly did die for our sins.

I encourage everyone to read John 17. It taught me 3 things: How Unity among believers and non-believers can exist, how to protect myself from evil, and how infathomable eternal life truly is. The verses are significant because many of the words come straight from the "Lords Prayer." This is often an every-day prayer that families say before dinner. Have you truly ever thought of the meaning behind those words??? Sit down and examine this. Really break it apart and see the relevance behind EACH word:

The Lords Prayer:

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Our group has been encouraged to fast before and during our trip. This doesn't mean to neccesarily give up all food. It does mean, however, to give up something significant to you, and to fill it with complete and utter dependence on God. I have considered giving up coffee. For you who know me well, this is going to be quite difficult for me. I realize how much of a "crutch" its become, especially since I work the 2 a.m. shift at the T.V. station. Encouragment is always welcome!

2nd Africa Video!!

It brings me great pleasure to present to you the 2nd video installment following our Africa journey! This video was aired on NBC25 on Friday May 11th. A special thanks must be extended to Dale Woods, Linda and Tom Mulanix, and Roger Allen for their countless hours of time and footage they have provided me with. I am in the planning stages of another video before we go, and most certainly another few videos during and when we get back to the states. Enjoy!

As for myself, I am doing well! I just ran the 25k RiverBank run this past Saturday in Grand Rapids. It was such a wonderful and beautiful day! I thank God for these opportunities he keeps providing me with. Here's a few pictures:

Why the Senseless acts of Violence?

The horrific and tragic shootings at Virginia Tech have broken my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the 32 victims as well as the shooter's family. This senseless act of violence is a reminder that pure evil continues to exist in this world. My only wish is that the family and friends of the deceased can remember the actions of the Amish community following the horrific events that unfolded in Pennsylvania, 8 months ago. Compassion and forgivness was never an after-thought with those people. Let us not solve this violence with more violence.

Uniting With a Cause...

I am ecstatic about this trip and everyone going along. Everything is coming along perfectly. So much planning has been put forward by Compassionate Life Foundation and New Covenant Free Methodist Church, it is hard not to get excited. Not only are specifics about the trip coming together, but the mission's team is becoming very close as well. In fact, I feel we are all becoming one big family. Each of us recognizes how vital it is to work as a team once we arrive in Swaziland. That's why we continue to meet, in order to build teamwork skills within the group. Everyone is now able to put names with faces, and we even know quite a bit about each other's personalities. Last Sunday, the mission's team met after Church. (To your left, is a picture of our meeting) We took spiritual personality profiles to better understand our own faith, as well as the faith of others around us. It was called "Uniquely You; Personalizing My Faith."

I believe that personalizing our faith is vital to spiritual growth. It involves developing relationships with others and the Church. As a Christian, I believe we posses a "God-given Personality," along with certain spiritual gifts we must act upon. The difficulty is determining which features are our strongest assets to share with the world. That was the significance of our latest meeting.

Last Sunday was a major "spiritual step" for me. I believe I have discovered my own spiritual gift's, given to me by God. Not only is it exciting, but it is also enlightening. Mainly because I feel that I have been searched in the wrong area's of my life for so long. I would like to share this personal episode of my life, with the reader's of this blog.

Upon taking the Spiritual Gifts Profile, I have found that my strongest characteristics where these; Encouraging/Exhorting, Showing Mercy, and Administration/ Ruling. Here is what I've learned. The "encourager" is compelled to give advice. (Something I have done my entire life). Often "exhorter's" are a confidant to others. They are sought as counselor's and enjoy using their communication skills to share specific insights. I agree with this diagnosis. Also, "showing mercy" has always been a big part of my life. This trip, hopefully, demonstrates my sensitivity to other people's suffering. I can't hold back any longer and let this opportunity pass me by. It is time to take action in my life. Upon serving an "Administration role", I must say, I was a bit perplexed by this one. Even though I have no intentions of ruling over a group of people, I think I feel compelled by a strong sense of duty, to take action in this world.

So there it is. I guess that's about as personal as it gets. I hope it hasn't come off as condescending or egotistical. That is not my intention. I just feel like I have found a real awakening in this life. Now it's time to move forward with it. Coming soon...another Africa Video post! Hope this finds you all well!

Community Reaction...

Hello All!

I have had some amazing experiences recently, regarding the community reaction towards my NBC25 Africa video. God works in such wonderful ways. Among an outpooring of e-mails and phone calls, a special man approached me from the Bay City area. He is a Priest from St. James Catholic Church and his name is Father Bob DeLand. A very out-going man with a heart of gold. He called me at the Television station and we had a great conversation about my up-coming Africa trip as well as his own traveling experiences. He has been a Missionary around the world. He mentioned travels in Austria, Nepal, and Nairobi Kenya. Among his duties as a priest, he also over-sees the St. James Catholic school system in Bay City. He asked if I would like to come and speak to the school children about my proffession and also my up-coming trip to Africa. Here's a few pictures from this well-behaved and very attentive classroom.

We had lots of fun talking about weather and Africa. They had great questions to ask. And they even gave me some great St. Patrick's day apparel for this up-coming holiday weekend! Father Bob asked me to go out to lunch with him after talking with the children. He even had a good chuckle when I unknowingly asked him [a Priest, mind you] if he was married. I gueess I have a pretty good excuse not being raised in the Catholic religion. Regardless, I think the entire school knew about my funny question before I left. :-) Anyways, his advice and kind words were such an inspiration to me. We talked about what to expect on my trip to Africa. He prepared me for the poverty, the disease, and the African hardships we would encounter while over there...But he also testified to their HOPE. And it went on from there...

He mentioned a word that really stuck with me. He said "Derek, go to Africa and EMBRACE those children. EMBRACE their families." When I later reflected on the word EMBRACE, it really "hit home" that this was indeed, my true intentions of the trip. Webster's Dictionary defines EMBRACE as the act to take or receive gladly or eagerly; accept willingly. After some praying and serious soul searching, I now know what God's purpose for me on this trip is. TO EMBRACE. I will willingly recieve these children and their families and help them to the best of my abilities. I really think the word speaks for itself. I will leave it right there.

But I do challenge you to EMBRACE what's important to you. Whether it be your family, friends, morales or idealistic values...take it to the next level. Never abandon what God has given you. Personally, god has given me this opportunity to travel to Africa. I will EMBRACE it with my heart and soul.

NBC to Follow the Journey!

I have been working hard on creating a special news story to introduce the Africa Mission's trip to the community I live in. It's going along quite well. Everyone who lives Mid-Michigan and N. Detroit will be able to view this on NBC 25 (Channel 6 on Comcast or Channel 25 with "bunny-ear attenas." The air-date is this Friday, February 16th. I will first intoduce the story at 6:30 in the morning during my morning weather-cast. Then it will be aired again at night during the 6 O'clock news. I hope everyone will be able to catch it. However, if you don't happen to be around the area, I am working to stream the video onto this blog-site (fingers crossed!). Anyways, here's a rough template that my graphics department made for the piece. Sorry I look so cheesy. :-)

For all you SiSwati-illiterate people (including myself), that is hello, and how are you in the Swazi peoples' native language! It's been a busy life these past few weeks. This journey has encompassed a lot of time. This is okay, but I think I never realized the amount of work that goes into setting up a Missions Trip. So thanks to all for your loving support. The comments and e-mails have been very uplifting, and the prayers have been heard! I want to share a few pictures with you all. Last week, it was my turn to get the first of three series of immunizations. In order to travel to this part of the world, The Center for Disease Control has a list of required and recommended shots/vaccinations. Don't be fooled by the picture of me gripping my shoulder, it didn't really hurt all that bad! Haha! (yeah right!)
At least they gave me sweet Snoopy and Charlie Brown band-aids! I guess it was all worth it. Anyways, its official! It really felt like this sealed the deal. I think this was a big point for me after I received these shots. It hit me with the idea that "hey, this journey is really underway." For any of you interested in perhaps traveling to South Africa, here is the list of required/recommended immunizations that you get before traveling there:
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis B
Rabies
Typhoid
Tetanus-diphtheria
Malaria (No vaccine for this, but it is controlled with taking a pill every day, starting before your trip and lasting 4 weeks after!)

I am busy working on putting together a special "Story" for my television station. If you didn't know, NBC 25 (Flint, MI) is documenting this entire mission's trip. This is an opportunity for me to utilize my unique proffesion, to be a voice for the community I live in. The first in the series will be completed by February 16th (at least it better be, because that's the due date given to me!) I am also working hard on getting this video file to stream on this site. It may take some creative thinking, but I will get it to you all so you can see! I can't thank everyone enough for everything. Meeting the Team!

Hello All!

Last Sunday, we had our first meeting with the basically the entire group (minus a few people) attending the trip. It went perfectly. Lots of questions where answered, and I need to share them with you. We were taught General Culture about the Swazi people, their history, traditions, basic language skills, and their climate/geography. This is 100% neccesary to educate oneself before being entered into their culture. First and foremost, I would like to share with you our itinerary:

Additions: Time with the Orphans / Prayer Walk / Hospital Visit

The trip has officially been extended one day. We needed more time to accomplish tasks while we where down there.

I need to get something off my mind. I really want everyone to understand my intentions for this trip. I am not seeking my own personal benefits from this mission. I am here to help. I am here to educate. I am here to be a friend to the Swazi people (the orhpans, the children, the widows, the broken families). I am here to show my love through my actions. I don't wish to change the traditions and culture of South Africa, or Swaziland for that matter. Their nation is rich with wonderful traditions. But their has to be a shift. A shift in what they understand.

Here is some food for thought: In remote Swaziland, HIV and the AIDS virus is considered a curse or a form of witchcraft in their nation. The Swazi people beleive that having sexual relations with a virgin is a way to cleanse their body from their ailment. This only spreads the pandemic to disturbing statistics. Swaziland is currently the most HIV-infected country in the world. 46%-49% of its population is carrying the virus. Their culture also teaches Polygamy. A man's status is judged by how many wives he can afford. This mis-education is so unfortunate and it makes my heart ache.

I don't know all the answers to this countries problems. But whatever "it" may be, I want to be a part of it. I AM LOOKING TO HELP THE PEOPLE WHO CAN'T HELP THEMSELVES. We are a rich nation that has been blessed by God. In the end we will be held accountable to God for how we responded to such a crisis and how we used what God has given us. (Matthew 25:31-46) Please continue with your prayer support. This missions trip is as much yours as it is mine. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Here's what I am praying for:

Pray that the proper immunizations would be administered and that we would be healthy when they need to be given.
Airline tickets and all transportation would be available for all to go and at a good price.
Pray that all the details of my trip would be communicated clearly and worked out successfully.
That we would trust God to provide the funds needed to go.
Pray that God would show me those who He has put in place to contribute to my mission.
Praise God for those who've stepped forward to support my trip financially..
Pray that God would strengthen and prepare me physically, emotionally, and spiritually for this work.
Pray for God’s protection as we travel and during our time in Africa.
Pray for God’s protection for our families during our time in Africa.
That God would be preparing in advance the work He would have us do.
That God would be preparing the people's hearts to receive us.
That God would lead us to the books, resources that would prepare our hearts for Africa.
That we would pack and bring the appropriate clothes, materials, etc. for the trip.
That the roommates we will have in Africa will be God's choice.
That we would be willing to do whatever God asks us to with a right attitude; in preparation, while in Africa, and afterwards.
That as we see with our own eyes the people and situation there....it would become personal.
That God would break our hearts to the point of action that this would just be the beginning of something much more.
That the people I will come in contact with in Swaziland would see Jesus in my actions.
That I would accomplish all that God has prepared for me to do and that lives would be transformed.

Hello Family and Friends! How are you!?! I miss all of you! Things are well here in Clio, Michigan. In fact, there great! My job is excellent, my friends are close, and there's food in my belly. No worries! Thanks to everyone for their support and interest in this next chapter of my life. I value every one of your opinions. I want to use this blog site as an opportunity to communicate with family and friends. I think it has plenty of advantages over conventional e-mail. First and foremost, you can check it at your own leisure, and not have another e-mail get lost in the masses (don't forget about me though, haha!). Another advantage is the on-going discussions/comments that can be made via the site. My, how far two tin cans connected by a string, have come!

Anyways, this first blog is a "set-up blog." A filler-blog, if you will. I have to let you know how I have made the decision to go to Africa this up-coming summer. First of all, after years of searching for a church that fits my personal Christian Journey, I have found one! The church I attend in Grand Rapids, Keystone Community Church, will always be home to me...but this one is feeling more and more like family. Especially after becoming quite involved in the church. First of all, you probably want to know the name. Its called New Covenant Free Methodist Church, located in Clio, Michigan.. Here's a link:

You can visit that at your leisure. It's a fantastic church that I have made new friends at quickly. I volunteer at the coffee shop located in the front of the church. Any of you who know me well, know that I worked at a coffee shop for 4 years during college. That has made the coffee gig quite a breeze. Also, I have been playing guitar with the church band located in the entrance of the building. We have been playing Christmas music lately, but also find time to re-create some Miles Davis of John Coltrane (which isan't half bad either).

The Church has had ties with the South Africa area for some 7 years now, and it recently, by God's will, started it's very own church in Swaziland. Here is a picture of where we are headed. In fact, over Labor Day weekend this past summer, they did a live video "first communion," with the Swazi's new church and ours back in Michigan...all via- satellite. How cool is that? It really caught my eye, and I felt drawn to help the African people. More about that in just a second... So here I am with a new church, a new job, and a new life. I live alone in an a quiant little appartment with all my gadgets and gizmo's. Much of my time is spent working at the T.V. station, playing guitar, lifting at the gym, coaching soccer, or staring at my new snowboard and wishing for snow! Gotta love Michigan ;-) My latest journey is heading to Africa for some Missions work with New Covenant Church.

It was a grueling application process where 45 people applied from the church, and only 12 positions where available to head to Africa (because of transportation issues in the actual country). There where refference forms that family and friends filled out for me. (By the way, thanks to all of you who did that for me. It meant a lot!) And I finally recieved a letter of acceptance. Here is a picture of the original 12. Something that has recently been a blessing is that we just found out that more transportation has been arranged in the area, and they have now accepted EVERYONE that applied to trip! (A new picture of the whole group will be posted A.S.A.P.) How amazing! Clio, Michigan U.S.A. will be represented by 25 people, taking time from there lives, to spread the love of God in Africa! You see, we are traveling to a very remote area of Swaziland. Transportation is VERY limited down there. We originally only had 2 vans to transport people...More means of transportation are being made available. How cool is that! God is listening...and I feel so privaledged to be a part of his will. I am not traveling to Africa for any evangalistic aspect. In fact, I have absolutely no intentions of that at all. I want to show my love for God through my service to others. At New Covenant, we learned about Tithing. Not only money, but our time and our abilities in the name of the church. It was an interesting quote that our pastor shared with us one Sunday that really struck a chord with me. It is actually a quote from Gahndi:

"The best way to find yourself, is to loose yourself in the service of others."

I think this quote is so powerful. I want to live my life like this. I think Africa is a good start. Did you know that there is estimated to be 143 Miliion orphans in the world? 43 Million live in Africa! This number is increasing daily due to the AIDS Pandemic sweeping through the country. In fact, in some countries of Sub-Sahara Africa, 46% of the general population is HIV positive. Here is a picture of a bracelet on my wrist. This is the ONE bracelet.

I will not remove this before my trip to Africa. It is my reminder of the unity and purpose of this trip. (If you see me without it, for whatever reason, make sure to ask me where it is...hold me accountable!) Let us not forget the faces of poverty and disease in this country. I want to be the liaison between this troubled country and yourself. Let me open your eyes. Follow me through this journey. It won't be something any of us soon forget.

Through out this next 6 months and leading up to my departure in July 2007, we will learn TOGETHER, the African culture, what needs to be done down there, and how we can all help. I am working in partnership with New Covenant Church and Compassionate Life Foundation. They are a local based (Michigan) organization. Here is their mission statement:
